Yazhou Folk Songs
Originating in the ancient town of Yazhou near present day Sanya before slowly spreading throughout the island, Yazhou Folk Songs are one of the oldest forms of folk songs still extant in Hainan today. Sung in the Hakka language these lovely songs have a strong sense of rythym and meter.
Yazhou Folk Songs have slowly migrated from the oral tradition to the written and are currently most popular in and around Sanya City and Ledong County. From cultural history to scenery, a wide range of topics compromising all areas of life and work are found in the lyrics of recorded compositions.
“Ten for Her Lover,” “Liang’s Song,” “Zhang’s Song,” “The Song of Zhang Lijun” and “In the Spring Garden” are some of the better known examples of Yazhou folk songs sung today.
